Trinitarians claim that in John 8:58 Jesus is calling himself the "I AM" because the KJV, NIV and other translations render John 8:58 "before Abraham was, I AM". They make the connection to Exodus 3:14 which says in the KJV, NIV, Bible in Basic English, New English Bible "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." They see the similar words in English translations so they make the connection. The problem with that is that Jesus did not speak English. So trinitarians claim that Jesus was quoting from the Septuagint which is a translation into Greek from the Hebrew. John 8:58 in Greek says "lego humin, prin Abraam genesthai ego eimi." Let's look int if Jesus could have quoted that to say that he was Jehovah. Below is a picture of a triglot bible. In the left column is the Hebrew, middle column is the Greek Septuagint and the right column is the New International Version. Exodus 3:14 in the Septuagint reads "The God to Moses said, (Ego eimi ho on) I am the one [or the being]. This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, (Ho On) The One [or the being] has sent me to you." In the Greek "Ego Eimi (I am)" is not used as the name or title of God; it is used as a pronoun linking verb combination. The term "Ho On (The One)" is used as the title for God as that is repeated in the Greek for the English "I AM". Thus Jesus could not have quoted from the Septuagint to identify himself with Jehovah as an I AM.
